This site is unusual in that it has a privacy obligation to people who have never contacted it, and that obligation is dealt with first.

The source dataWhat we throw away before publishing

The connection counts on this site come from the federal Safe Drinking Water Information System, which publishes a record for every public water system in the country. That file is not only about systems. Each row also names an administrative contact for the system and carries that person’s email address, telephone number and postal address.

Those four fields are dropped at the moment the file is read, before any page is generated, and they exist nowhere in anything we publish. Nothing on this site names an individual water system operator or gives any means of contacting one. The file is public and republishing it in full would be lawful; we do not, because a page about how many homes a utility serves does not need somebody’s personal phone number attached to it.

Our figuresSystems, not households

A service connection count describes a utility. It says nothing about any address served by it, and we hold no household-level information about anybody on any system anywhere — no water quality results for a property, no softener ownership, no usage.

When you callThe four things a call leaves behind

The number you dialed from, when the call began, how long it lasted, and the broad area it came from. The area is the working part: it is how a call reaches a contractor who covers where you live. There is no form on this website, so a call is the only way it can receive anything about you at all.

What we pass onTo one contractor and no further

What you say about the water or the equipment goes to the contractor who takes the call, because it is what they need in order to turn up with the right thing. It goes nowhere else. We do not sell contact details and we do not supply them to anybody selling treatment equipment.
