What a Water Softener Should Cost, and Why Nobody Quotes It Online

We do not set prices and cannot quote you. What we can do is show what the price is made of, so a number you are given can be argued with.

Softener pricing is quoted in ranges because the unit is only part of it. The grains-per-day requirement, the plumbing at the installation point, and whether a drain and a power outlet are already there all move the number. Efficiency outlasts the sticker price.

Capacity, which follows from your grains per day. Whether iron has to be handled separately. Where the unit goes and what plumbing has to be altered to get it there. And whether the household needs a drain for regeneration discharge nearby.

Of those, only the first is something you can settle before anyone visits, and it is the one that most changes the number.

Buy on running costNot on sticker price

Two units at the same price can differ sharply in what they cost to run. EPA WaterSense gives the two figures worth asking for: 5 gallons of water or less per 1,000 grains removed, and salt efficiency above 3,350 grains per pound. A unit that misses both will cost more to run for its whole life, whatever it saved at purchase.

And sometimesThe answer is not to buy one

If your published hardness figure is low, the arithmetic will not support the spend. A salt-free conditioner is not a cheaper softener either — it does not remove hardness. We would rather tell you that than route the call.
